Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)

ESOS Phase 4 is the fourth phase of compliance under the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) Regulations. This is a mandatory energy assessment for large UK organisations. The Phase 4 compliance period runs from 6 December 2023, and the compliance deadline is 5th December 2027.

Our ESOS consultants can help you to achieve ESOS compliance through either the energy audit or the ISO 50001 energy management system route. Our ESOS consultancy service provides you with the expertise and support you need to achieve compliance with confidence.

Who needs to comply with ESOS Phase 4?

Obligated organisations must comply in phases, with each phase having a qualification date (on which a company must assess whether they are obligated) and a compliance deadline (by which date an organisation must be compliant). Organisations must currently comply with ESOS Phase 4 if, on 31st December 2026, they either:

  • Employ 250 or more people, or

  • Have an annual turnover in excess of £44m and an annual balance sheet total in excess of £38m, or

  • Are an overseas company with a UK-registered establishment which has 250 or more UK employees

How we help you navigate ESOS compliance

There are two main routes to compliance with ESOS: either through the development and maintenance of a certified ISO 50001 energy management system or through the energy audit route. Our expert ESOS consultants can support and guide you through both.

Energy Audit Route

  • Appoint the right Lead Assessor for your business.

  • Calculate accurate energy data, including electricity, heating, and fuel for fleet and company cars.

  • Identify areas of significant energy consumption.

  • Conduct high-quality ESOS-compliant energy audits onsite.

  • Notify the Environment Agency of compliance.

ISO 50001 Route

  • Check if your existing ISO 50001 system covers everything needed for ESOS compliance.

  • Identify any gaps between your ISO 50001 system and ESOS requirements.

  • Help you update your energy management system to close any compliance gaps.

  • Support the collection and organisation of energy data needed for ESOS.

  • Review energy performance across buildings, transport, and industrial processes.

  • Identify practical energy-saving opportunities and prioritise the best actions.

  • Prepare the evidence and documentation required for an ESOS assessment.

What is an ESOS Action Plan?

An ESOS action plan is a report stating which energy efficiency actions large UK organisations intend to commit to, with details of timelines and estimated kWh savings. Introduced during Phase 3, they are a new requirement for all ESOS-obligated companies.

At Beyondly, this ESOS service includes the provision of a spreadsheet inclusive of calculated savings, graphs, and timelines for action implementation. Our ESOS support includes a kick-off call, a review of existing ESOS reports and recommendations, and a collaborative call to discuss recommendations to pursue in the action plan period.

Following the action plan submission, you'll be required to provide an update on your progress within 12 months, and then 12 months after the first progress update deadline.

  • Phase 3 progress update deadline 1: 5th December 2025

  • Phase 3 progress update deadline 2: 5th December 2026

ESOS Compliance FAQs

ESOS runs on a four-year cycle, at the end of which a full assessment must be carried out by a lead assessor and the relevant information submitted to the Environment Agency. From Phase 3 onwards, there is also the requirement to report on action plans and provide annual progress updates in line with the recommendations from the assessment.

A complete approach to sustainability

Why does it matter and where to begin!

The climate crisis has led to increased demand on companies to assess and improve their environmental performance. Pressure comes from all stakeholders; investors, government, customers, employees, and the public. Therefore, in order to continue meeting expectations and grow as a business, it is crucial to develop and implement robust sustainability strategies.

The world of sustainability is complex, and with evolving demands and sustainability jargon it can be difficult to know where to start.  An additional challenge is that it can vary for every business, with the need to consider specifics for your industry and business model. This is where Beyondly's sustainability strategy can be tailored to your specific business, allowing you to excel in your industry and where it counts for you.

A sustainability strategy can help businesses create long-term benefits for their employees and business while ensuring they have a positive impact on the environment.

It's time to prepare for the future and embrace the demands of your stakeholders.
