What is Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting?

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting is mandatory UK legislation, requiring obligated businesses to report their global energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within their financial accounts annually.

Who needs to comply with Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting?

SECR applies to quoted companies of any size. Limited liability partnerships and UK-incorporated unquoted companies must also comply with the legislation if they meet two or more of the qualification criteria:

  • 250 or more employees

  • Turnover in excess of £36m, or

  • Balance sheet in excess of £18m

* Organisations using less than 40,000 kWh per annum are not be required to report.

What do obligated companies have to report?

Obligated companies must report and submit the following to Companies House annually:

  • Energy consumption and associated GHG emissions within their financial accounts for Companies House

  • At least one intensity metric, e.g. tonnes of CO₂e/£m sales revenue

  • Measures taken to improve energy efficiency

  • Methodology used

Reporting of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions is mandatory under SECR, with Scope 3 (value chain emissions) reporting currently voluntary under the framework.
